History

The Bergepanzer Büffel or Bergepanzer 3 ( BPz3 ) belongs to the group of combat support vehicles. It is a bilateral development of the Bundeswehr and the Dutch army, based on the Leopard 2 main battle tank.

The introduction of the Leopard 2 also emphasized the need to modernize the recovery components of the tank units. This development was necessary because the requirements for a recovery vehicle pushed the Bergepanzer 2 to its limits due to the increased weight of the Leopard 2 and other vehicles.

The company MaK (since 1992 Rheinmetall Landsysteme ) developed the Bergepanzer vehicle 3 “Büffel” on the chassis of the Leopard 2 with the aim of using as many components of the basic vehicle as possible.

The Bergepanzer III ''Buffalo''

Between 1992 and 1997, 75 vehicles were manufactured for the Bundeswehr, with Krauss-Maffei Wegmann supplying important components as the main contractor for the Leopard 2 platform. Another 25 vehicles, called Bergingstank 600 kN Buffel, went to the Dutch Army.

The Buffalo is used by the Bundeswehr in all tank battalions with the Leopard 2 and in the tank artillery units with the self-propelled howitzer 2000, as well as in the repair logistics of the army.

It's rol in the army includes the recovery and towing of tracked vehicles up to military load class 60 ( MLC 60 ), securing tracked vehicles when crossing water, providing support for repair work, recovering battle tanks with rapid recovery equipment under armor protection, clearing obstacles and, in emergencies, earthworks.

As with the Bergepanzer 2, the Büffel can carry a spare engine for the Leopard 2 on the rear. For self-defense, the three-man crew has an MG3 machine gun and a smoke bomb system. Thanks to an NBC protection system, the Buffalo can even be used on contaminated terrain.
