History
The Bergepanzer 2 is an armored recovery vehicle based on the Leopard 1 main battle tank, developed in the 1960s and manufactured by Atlas-MaK Maschinenbau for the West German army. It first entered service in 1966 and replaced the earlier Bergepanzer 1. Various versions have served in the armed forces of Germany and other countries. It was later succeeded by the Bergepanzer 3 "Büffel".
Its tasks include: ensuring the mobility of armoured troops , recovering damaged vehicles in combat, assisting with the installation and removal of engines and turrets and supporting repairs. The vehicle is used by the army 's logistics troops and in the Bundeswehr 's armored infantry battalions as well as by the armies of other countries which operate the Leopard 1.
The Bergepanze 2A2
With the introduction of the Gepard anti-aircraft gun tank and the Leopard 2, a more powerful variant of the Bergepanzer 2 was developed and introduced. Between 1977 and 1978, MaK delivered a total of 100 2A2 (LS) recovery vehicles to the German Army. The LS version had an extra support on the right-hand side of the rear, which meant that these vehicles were able to lift the 16-ton turret of a Gepard anti-aircraft tank. A further nine vehicles went to the Canadian Army under the designation Taurus – Armoured Recovery Vehicle (ARV).
