Jaap ter Haar's interest in history led to his greatest work: History of the Low Countries. He worked effectively for four years on this national history, which is also consistently divided into four extensive parts, in which romanticized history alternates. It is without a dry summary of dates and facts, but a fascinating story in which, as in all his books, the individual person is central with all his good and less good qualities.

The History of the Low Countries begins far into the story in Prehistory and actually in the twentieth century.
