Background information

The first prototypes of the MAZ-537 were built in 1958 and production began in 1960. The new vehicle featured an engine of 525 hp at 2100 rpm – a very high figure for that time, even armored vehicles and tanks had less horsepower. Many significant changes to the fuel supply, cooling system and lubrication necessitated a complete redesign of the engine compartment covers and slats.

Almost all components of the frame and chassis were strengthened, increasing the total weight to 21.6 tons (total gross weight 87 tons) allowing it to tow a load of up to 50 tons.

The first series of the MAZ-537 remained in production in Minsk until 1964 before being moved to the Kurgan plant, as previously happened with the MAZ-535.
